Open the LFS Personnel Licensing Search
The official search is the Personnel Licensing Search run by CDPH Laboratory Field Services (LFS), on cdph.ca.gov. It is public and free — no account, no password, and nothing to pay.

Those are the three things the LFS search accepts. The certificate number is the one that returns an exact match; a last name on its own is the fallback that survives a middle initial, a hyphenated surname, or a name changed since certification.
Read the status, then look twice at the date
The result carries one of four statuses — active, inactive, delinquent, or deceased — and an expiration date. Only active describes a certificate in good standing, and the date needs a second look, because California moved these certificates to annual renewal on 1 January 2026.
Print the result — it is worth 90 days
A printout of the LFS search result may serve as a valid 90-day temporary authorisation during hiring or renewal processing. That makes the printout worth keeping in its own right, not merely as evidence that somebody checked.
Understanding Your California Result
The Personnel Licensing Search reports one of four statuses, with an expiration date beside it. What each means for whether this person may draw blood in California today:
Active
The certificate was in good standing on the day you searched. Read the expiration date next to it before you file the result — and read it against the renewal change below, because a date two years out does not mean nothing is due this year.
Inactive or delinquent
Two of the four statuses LFS reports, and neither describes a certificate in good standing — so neither clears anyone to draw blood in California. LFS is the authority on what returns a certificate to active; renewing one that has expired takes 3 contact hours of continuing education completed within the last 12 months.
Deceased
The fourth status the search reports. If it comes back on a record you believe belongs to the person you are checking, you have matched the wrong record — search again by certificate number.
What a California Phlebotomy Certificate Allows
California issues three phlebotomy certificates rather than one, and the level is what decides which draws are lawful. Confirming that a certificate is active answers half the question; the other half is whether its level covers the work the role actually involves.

California requires one of these certificates of anyone who draws blood for clinical testing, other than exempt licensed professionals such as physicians, RNs, and clinical laboratory scientists. CDPH certification is also separate from — and in addition to — national certification: an NHA, ASCP, AMT, or NCCT credential does not by itself authorise a draw in California.
The expiration date can be out of step with the renewal cycle
Beginning 1 January 2026, every LFS personnel licence and certificate moved to a one-year renewal period. Certificates may still display a two-year expiration date during the LFS IT transition, but renewal is required after one year — so a date well in the future is not proof that nothing is due. Renewal takes 3 contact hours of continuing education from a Department-approved accrediting agency or accredited academic institution within the last year, filed with the CE certificates uploaded.
PERL is the login — and it is not this search
Anyone hunting for a CDPH phlebotomy login is usually looking for PERL, the LFS online system where a certificate holder files a renewal, uploads continuing-education certificates, and pays the renewal fee. What California Employers Check
A credential check is one part of what a California hospital, reference laboratory, clinic, or plasma centre confirms before a phlebotomist starts. In practice they verify:
- The California credential is active. This is the one that authorises the draw. An expired credential means the person may not legally work as a phlebotomist here, regardless of what else they hold.
- The national certification is current, at the source. Not a photocopied card — the certifying body's registry, which shows the real status and expiration date.
- Training and documented draws. Employers ask for evidence of a completed phlebotomy programme and a documented number of successful live venipunctures and capillary sticks; the certifying bodies set floors ranging from 30 venipunctures for NHA eligibility to 100 for certain ASCP routes.
- Current BLS/CPR, immunisations, background check and drug screen. Standard across the industry, and usually re-checked at intervals.
Phlebotomists: run the same checks on yourself once a year. It is the fastest way to confirm your record shows exactly what a hiring manager will see, and to catch a renewal that never posted.
